Hanging out before my next bike clinic

Look I'm biking! Fifteen days down from the 30 Days Of Biking pledge and rolling smoothly. I haven't had to think about biking because I need to get places and I do that by bike, mostly--to work, to lightrail, to schools, errands, friends' houses. It's been such a busy month taking classes, attending the City Management Academy, and teaching, not having to "fit" biking or even exercise in general, has been a relief.

Getting ready for the LightRail! This was a heavy load!

One major highlight has been the start of bike rodeo season! Our first was at Sunrise Elementary where I am the bike/ped coordinator through the 50 Corridor TMA. We had about 35 students show up on bike to learn bike safety and handling skills, but mostly just to have fun! Kids and bikes are my favorite combination!

Rain and shine: day 7

Spring break is over and it was back to school for everyone this morning. We were drenched in a downpour dropping off the boys but it cleared up a bit as I made my way to school. I noticed that they're finally making some progress on the bike/ped bridge to bypass the terrible lack of infrastructure on Sutterville rd. And Freeport blvd. I'm a confident rider and even I hate those sections.

There weren't very many bikes locked up at the racks today and drivers were noticeably crazier than usual. I'm glad I gave myself lots of time to ride over and remembered the plastic baggie for my seat in case it rains again while I'm in class for the next eight hours (I sure hope it does!).

My rain barrels are full again, it's a lovely respite from this heat we've been having, and I saw these guys taking advantage of the fresh water.

Got a text last night that said "If it's raining, we'll pick you up." Funny, because I had just been trying to talk myself out of going to our friends' Easter egg hunt. We love hanging out with them and the egg hunt has become a bit of tradition but it was four miles away, early, and was supposed to start raining. It's easy to get out of social events when you don't have a car. No one questions me when I say "We just couldn't get there." Doesn't help someone who's a bit anti-social to begin with. Well, with no excuse available, we might as well ride over. It was a lovely slow ride there, a perfect way to spend Easter, and a wet ride home. My favorite kind of day. Thank goodness for pushy friends!

Day 5 down. Here's a picture of our bike-filled shed:

30 Days Of Biking

April 1st marked our 3rd year of participating in #30daysofbiking. I pledged to ride every day this month. The first year was difficult but as we've engrained biking into our everyday lives, it's become pretty natural. I had forgotten about my pledge until I started reading about others' rides that day. Luckily, I had already been out and about on my bike, racking up 2.5 hours worth of riding mostly for transportation and work.

Yesterday was a bit harder as I found myself carpooling to a meeting, taking light rail, and walking. The boys and I actually had to take a spin around the neighborhood to make sure we got a ride in.

It was a beautiful but windy evening. Spring is difficult in Sacramento and they say that if you don't have allergies when you move here, you'll get them soon. The boys and I were choking after our short ride. It was still a wonderful way to end our day but I'm hoping to fond a good solution to the drippy-nose season.

Today's another easy day and we've already ridden the HaD to drop off a kiddo, to a meeting, dropping off the next kiddo, then for work.

If you haven't signed up for 30 Days, you should! It's a great way to get into the habit of riding and they donate a bike to a child in need for every 30 pledges!
