Yesterday, I was putting Big Brother's helmet on when one of the pads came out attached to the Velcro. I noticed a crack on the side and then a few more. It was time for a replacement helmet.
We went over to Practicial Cycle today to look for a new one and BB fell in love with the Nutcase Glo-Brain. I wear Nutcase helmets and love them. This helmet is big enough for his head to keep growing and I like the full coverage as opposed to the lighter "racer" style, especially since we can be kind of rough on bike equipment in this family. It's nice and visible and it's something he'll wear happily.
I know that helmet use is a highly debated topic but for our family, we've weighed all the pros and cons and we choose to wear them (it's also the law for anyone under 18 anyway). Surprisingly, in the 2 years I've had this site up, I've only had one person tell me I'm wrong to "force" my children to wear helmets. I get pretty annoyed at anyone telling me what to do with my children, however, I'm very secure in my decision. I figure that both side of the pro/anti helmet folks have good arguments for their reasons to wear/not wear a helmet. I like that my helmet is fun, it keeps my head warm, the sun out of my eyes, and it's probably not going to hurt me. Plus, if my kids have to wear them, I'm going to lead by example.
Most importantly, Big Brother looks pretty darn cool.
