I'd been looking for a travel bike on Craigslist and came across Mobic, a relatively new folding bike but on par with Bike Friday, Dahon, and Brompton quality but at a much lower price. Even better, they were offering "like new" demo bikes for less. I jumped at the chance and actually drove (blah!) to Freemont (I actually had to pick up Big Brother anyway who was visiting the other G'parents in the Bay Area). Talking with founder and CEO of Mobic, Michael, I was able to get a nice background and walk-through of the bikes they build. Test riding was awesome! It's a nice, solid, zippy bike--no flex or wobble--a nice range of gears (6 to be exact). I tried out an "upgraded" one with nicer pedals, a larger chainring, and a rack, but I decided to stay with the "like new" for the price and knowing that I could upgrade those parts on an "as needed" basis. Michael did offer to swap out the seatpost for a longer one so that it could range from 4'9" to over 6'. One important feature for me was that the whole family would be able to use this bike without a problem.
I am really looking forward to more adventures with Mr. Mobic, however, the second we got home and after I unfolded it (as demoed above), Jose took him out for a spin and declared the Mobic as his new commuter bike. We'll see...
Also, don't assume that we are replacing the Mundo! The Mundo is my soulmate! However, I do foresee Mobic becoming a great addition and occasional cargo for the Mundo.

This is how you pick up a carseat from across town because you don't use your car and forget that the little ones' seats are in someone else's car.
