No Cargo Ride but heading car free...

Bummer that our Sacramento Cargo Ride to the Davis Cargo ride never manifested. A couple of people who were planning on coming backed out due to work obligations and others had excuses earlier on. Jose was under the weather and my dad was only planning on coming to support me (and most likely, be protective for the ride. My folks are such worrywarts). I got to hang out with Tim from Practical Cycle for awhile then went back home. My sad Mundo didn't get a chance to play with friends. Unfortunately, many people have work/family/life obligations that prevent them from taking a 20 mile ride to another town just to do a 3 mile ride and then ride those 20 miles back home. What is wrong with everyone? Isn't this everyone's idea of a perfect evening? Geez. The real issue that comes out of this is that Sacramento needs it's own Cargo Ride. We can't piggyback onto Davis's. Yes, I'm sure they'll have had a lovely turn out and a great ride and probably ate amazing tamales but their ride was a lot more standard for cargo folks and weekday evenings.

I know there have been cargo rides in Sacramento before. John Boyer from Edible Pedal put together a great Cargo Ride/Food Bank Collection that was a huge success. I look forward to future possibilities to join in Sacramento's growing cargo bike community. This Sunday, there is a CycleFest at Southside Park and I plan on tracking down the owner of Cycle Trucks, a local builder of amazing Bakfiets-style bikes and trailers and discussing more possibilities.

One other bonus of not taking the entire evening to ride to Davis and back is that I should be more rested for my early morning appearance on Good Morning Sacramento on News 10. We'll be apart of the Cool California Challenge segment and have approximately 2.5 minutes to discuss our bike and what we're doing for the challenge. Super nervous! Fingers crossed that I won't be too horrible on live t.v.

In other news, I made the first step to going car-free! A quick call to the Toyota dealership determined my options to getting out of the lease early. 1--pay off the rest of the lease and return the car or 2--pay off the lease plus the remaining value of the car and then sell the car on our own. I think we'll take door number 2, Bob. Jose is going to take the car in and get a final overhaul maintenance and hopefully have them paint in a couple of nicks and then our car should be in pretty darn good shape to pass along to another home, hopefully for about the amount needed to buy it off. We've started looking into Zipcars as well as car-sharing with my folks (which we do already because none of us drive often). Based on our options, I am incredibly confident that we will be able to ditch the car within the next few months--hopefully sooner! Once we start saving the car payment and insurance costs, extra transportation options like trains, car rentals, and taxis, will help cover any additional driving needs. I am really excited!

It's great to read about what you guys are doing. I've been car free in LA for 3-1/2 years, and while it's been challenging and limiting in some ways, it's left me in good shape physically and financially. Good luck with everything!

Wow, Diana! That is great that you have been car-free for so long! We are making the steps to ditch our car. I usually enjoy the little challenges of figuring out ways to go without the car and if we weren't paying the car payment, we'd be left with a lot more money to explore our backup options--train, bus, car shares/rentals. Besides, if we only need a car 2-4 times a month, that's pretty easy to work around. What kinds of things do you do when you "need" a car?

A bad credit car loan is available to those with a poor credit score. Buying a car with adverse credit might cost you more than normal, but you will at least be able to buy a car. This might enable you to get back to work and start repairing your credit score.
